Secondo Wood (1991) è l'organo copulatore del maschio dei Ditteri superiori derivato dalla fusione apicale dell'edeago detto con la guaina paramerale (Cumming et al., 1994; Sinclair, 2000; Cumming & Wood, 2009). Molti Autori adottano tuttavia il termine edeago esteso anche ai Ditteri superiori (Colles & McAlpine, 1970; Griffiths, 1972; McAlpine, 1981; Matile, 1993; Zatwarnicki, 1996; Cerretti, 2010).
