Nel sistema Comstock-Needham è il nome abbreviato con cui si indica il ramo anteriore della prima biforcazione del settore radiale (Comstock, 1918a; McAlpine, 1981. Come condizione primitiva, ricorrente anche nei Nematoceri e nei Brachiceri inferiori, questa vena si ramifica ulteriormente, originando i rami R2 e R3, mentre nella generalità dei Ditteri superiori resta indivisa (Comstock, 1918b; McAlpine, 1981).
